I\u2019ve written a check to the state and the feds in case I somehow under withheld, but I\u2019m just not quite in the mood to sit down and work through all those forms.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I\u2019m not thinking about it, at least subconsciously.<\/p>\n<p>Why else would I have made bean counter soup this week (aka Ten Bean Soup)?\u00a0 Why else would I just happen upon a long forgotten memory of a soup my mom used to make in her pre-vegetarian days?\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I have the recipe somewhere.\u00a0 She actually wrote it up on a 4&#215;6 card back when I was in college (the second time).\u00a0 I was finally learning how to cook and it was my first exposure to the ham hock.<\/p>\n<p><em>Boy, they weren\u2019t kidding with that \u201ceverything but the <\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">oink<\/span><em>\u201d line.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ten Bean is a rich, earthy soup that was also popular with the guys on my crew team, as long as we weren\u2019t rowing the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure where this numbered bean tradition got started and whether it really had anything to do with the only profession that looks forward to tax season, but the custom has continued.\u00a0 In fact, just the other day at Caputo\u2019s I noticed a bag of beans labeled \u201c15 Bean Soup.\u201d\u00a0 I thought this a bit excessive but am pretty sure those extra beans were a holdover from the pre-recession days.<\/p>\n<p>Remember?\u00a0 Back when excess was all the rage and a soup with fifty percent more beans was a sign of just how well you were doing.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet \u201c15 Bean Soup\u201d was even sold as a value proposition under a marketing campaign featuring such titillating MBA acronyms as ROI (return on investment), KPI (key performance indicators) and maybe even BEAN (Business Executive\u2019s Accounting Network).<\/p>\n<p>Now, unfortunately, on my street anyway, that enthusiasm for all things \u201chigh finance\u201d has dried up like one more bag of beans. \u00a0Yet over on Wall Street, the execs are still living high on the hog and throwing out any cuts as pedestrian as ham hocks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Not that I\u2019m bitter, savory, yes, but not bitter. Nor am I getting ready to make Tea Soup. \u00a0(Unless you\u2019ve got a good recipe, in which case, leave it in the comments.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not among the \u201cnewly\u201d unashamed fat cats?\u00a0 Not to worry.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Bean Soup is as economical as it is delicious.\u00a0 Beans, celery, carrots, onions, even the hocks are all dirt cheap, and my family, every one of them, loved the soup.\u00a0 (Clearly there\u2019s a connection between kids and beans. See also burritos, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoupblog.com\/?p=771\">Turkey Chili<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoupblog.com\/?p=714\">Minestrone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoupblog.com\/?p=441\">Veggie Chili<\/a>, etc.)\u00a0 Moreover, if you buy the beans in one pound bags, you\u2019ll have enough beans to make at least four batches of soup.<\/p>\n<p>So once tax season finally does roll around, you\u2019ll already be an expert at tightening your belt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ten Bean Soup<br \/>\n<\/strong>(serves 6-8)<br \/>\n\u00bd cup cannelloni beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup black-eyed peas<br \/>\n\u00bd cup red kidney beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup garbanzo beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup navy beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup adzuki beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup great northern white beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup black beans<br \/>\n\u00bd cup green split peas<br \/>\n\u00bd cup red lentils<br \/>\n12 cups stock<br \/>\n\u00bd lb carrots, sliced<br \/>\n\u00bd lb celery, sliced<br \/>\n\u00bd lb onion, chopped<br \/>\n2 T dried parsley<br \/>\n2 bay leaves<br \/>\n4 cloves garlic, minced<br \/>\n1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes<br \/>\n1 \u00bd-2 lbs ham hocks<br \/>\nsalt &amp; pepper to taste<br \/>\n2 cups water (optional)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You\u2019ll need at least a 6 quart pot although you cando      the whole thing in a crock pot, if you\u2019d prefer. \u00a0Add all the beans together with the      stock, carrots, celery, onions, parsley, bay leaves, garlic, tomatoes, ham      hocks and seasoning into the pot.\u00a0      Okay, add everything except the last 2 cups of water.<\/li>\n<li>Bring the soup to a boil and simmer over low for an      hour and a half.\u00a0 If you want to      soak the beans first, you won\u2019t have to cook them as long, but you\u2019ll have      soak them the night before.<\/li>\n<li>After 1 \u00bd hours, take the the ham hocks out of the soup,      remove all the ham from the hocks, slice it up and return it to the soup.<\/li>\n<li>Heat the soup through once more, adding as much of the      extra water as you see fit if the soup is too thick for you.<\/li>\n<li>Serve with (how\u2019d you guess?) crusty bread and      salad.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great meal for a late      winter evening.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Image Credit: <\/em>\u201cCulinary Bar Chart\u201d by the author.\u00a0 <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If I\u2019ve alienated anyone from the banking industry, I am sorry.\u00a0 I certainly don\u2019t want to start any class warfare.\u00a0 If you\u2019d like to add your five extra types of beans to this soup, feel free.\u00a0 My only request is that you tell me how it turned out in the comments section.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m not ready to do my taxes yet.
